In Memoriam: The Honorable Dirk Kempthorne (1951–2026)
The Peregrine Fund joins the many mourning the loss of our Board Chairman, The Honorable Dirk Kempthorne, who passed away last month. A man of extraordinary character and principled leadership, Dirk brought to our mission the same integrity, wisdom, and unwavering dedication that defined his decades of distinguished public service. His guidance shaped The Peregrine Fund in profound ways, and his legacy will be seen in the work we carry forward in his honor.
Dirk’s career spanned the highest levels of American public life:
- Governor of Idaho (1999–2006): Led the state with a focus on economic growth, education, and responsible stewardship of Idaho’s natural heritage.
- United States Secretary of the Interior (2006–2009): Guided the management of America’s national parks, public lands, and natural resources under President George W. Bush.
- United States Senator, Idaho (1993–1999): Served Idaho in the U.S. Senate with a reputation for thoughtful, bipartisan engagement.
- Mayor of Boise (1986–1993): Helped shape Boise into the thriving city it is today during a pivotal period of growth.
- President, American Council of Life Insurers: Extended his public service influence into the national policy arena.
Dirk Kempthorne was a trusted leader and devoted public servant, so it is a fitting tribute that the nuclear engine room aboard the USS Idaho will bear his name, a lasting testament to his lifelong dedication to this country.
To The Peregrine Fund, Dirk was more than a chairman—he was a trusted steward of our mission, a devoted advocate for the birds and landscapes we protect, and a leader whose quiet strength and enduring conviction shaped this organization for the better. We will be forever grateful for his years of friendship, guidance, and commitment.
