Help Prevent Extinction of African Raptors

An international team of researchers co-led by Dr. Darcy Ogada of The Peregrine Fund and Dr. Phil Shaw of St. Andrews University has found that Africa’s raptors are facing an extinction crisis. The study warns of declines in nearly 90% of the 42 species examined, which is devastating and requires immediate action.

“Since the 1970s, extensive areas of forest and savanna have been converted into farmland, while other pressures affecting African raptors have likewise intensified. With the human population projected to double in the next 35 years, the need to extend Africa’s protected area network – and mitigate pressures in unprotected areas – is now greater than ever.” – Dr. Phil Shaw

Growing Risk of Extinction

  • Declines found in 37 raptor species
  • 29 species declined by at least 30% over three generations, indicating that they are at heightened risk of extinction
  • Most species declined more than twice as rapidly outside of protected areas, indicating the importance of protected areas for species survival
  • 69% of the species examined qualify as globally threatened based on their rates of decline

This campaign will contribute 20% of all donations to the African Leadership Grant. The grant will support the development of raptor researchers and future conservation leaders.
