Vultures do a job most animals can’t. They can strip a carcass in record time, which interrupts a chain that otherwise leads to diseases moving more easily from one species to the next — and impacting other wildlife, livestock, or even people.

But vultures are vanishing around the world, and when a species that prevents disease disappears, the consequences don’t stay in the wild.
