Volunteer on The Peregrine Fund's projects

The Peregrine Fund is seeking a volunteer to help release 6 – 12 captive bred Orange-breasted Falcons in the Mountain Pine Ridge of Belize’s Maya Mountains as part of an ongoing restoration program (see Isolation and decline of a population of the Orange-breasted Falcon, Condor 112(3):479-489). Successful applicants will have an opportunity to gain experience in applied raptor biology with a rare and charismatic rainforest icon from fledging to independence.

Duties include feeding and protecting the juvenile falcons prior to and after release and recording behavior (e.g., spectacular “playful” aerobatics, aggression, and conflicts) necessary for their survival. You will track the juvenile’s initial fights using radio telemetry and monitor them visually thereafter using binoculars and spotting scopes (provided). Work typically begins in early to mid June when large fledglings are transported to Belize, and continues through dispersal and independence from the hack site ~ October. The work is challenging with long hours of observation from dawn until dusk. At least two attendants will be on location at all times.

Applicants must be prepared to spend at least two months in the field, and preference will be given to persons committing to the entire season. Keen observation skills and knowledge of avian life histories are preferred qualifications. Persons with a passion for birds of prey who want to experience all aspects of raptor biology will want to apply! The selected candidate may qualify for a full time technical position and/or an advanced degree program. Food, lodging, a stipend, and transportation between the eco-lodge base camp and the release site will be provided.
