Documentary featuring daughteres of Chris Parish, head of condor recovery in Arizona, wins Carnegie Medal for Excellence

BOISE, Idaho – A documentary featuring the daughters of Chris Parish, head of The Peregrine Fund’s field operations for California Condor recovery in Arizona, was honored recently with the 2013 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video.

The award is given annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. Established with the support of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the medal honors an outstanding American video production for children.

“Anna, Emma and the Condor” was produced and directed by Katja Torneman, an Arizona filmmaker who followed the daily life of the Parish family to gain a perspective of conservation through the eyes of children. Together, the Parish girls revealed their unique view as they assisted their father’s work to recover the critically endangered California Condor in the rugged landscape that both the birds and the Parish family call home.

“Children will be inspired to see the ways that their peers, a pair of enthusiastic, very real girls, are living in partnership with the earth and doing what they can to make an important difference,” Maeve Visser Knoth, Carnegie Medal/Notable Children’s Videos committee chair, said in a news release.

Previous awards for the 20-minute video include:

  • The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival 2012 Audience Award Winner
  • Official selection at International Wildlife Film Festival Missoula 2012
  • Best Picture Zaki Gordon Film Institute Film Festival 2011
