Birds take to the skies for outdoor flight demonstrations in October at World Center for Birds of Prey

15 September 2011

BOISE, Idaho – Falcons, hawks, and eagles will demonstrate their remarkable flying skills at outdoor flight displays in October at The Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey.

Experts will use traditional falconry techniques to present the shows at 1:30 p.m. (weather permitting) on each Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in October. The dates are Oct. 1-2, Oct. 6-9, Oct. 13-16, Oct. 20-23, and Oct. 27-30.

A discounted admission package for families will be offered for the Oct. 6-9 shows. Two adults and two children will be admitted for $14, a savings of up to $10.

For several months, the birds, full-time avian ambassadors at the World Center for Birds of Prey, have been training with staff members and getting in shape for their outdoor flights. The flight crew includes a Peregrine Falcon – an impressive flyer that can reach speeds of more than 200 mph – along with a Gyrfalcon, Swainson’s Hawk, Aplomado Falcon, and, when conditions permit, a Harpy Eagle.

In addition to the flight demonstration, visitors can tour the Velma Morrison Interpretive Center, where there are hands-on activities for children and bird displays, and the Archives of Falconry, featuring an authentic Middle Eastern hunting tent, art, sculpture, and artifacts. A new interpretive trail takes visitors to a knoll and gazebo with scenic views of the Treasure Valley.

Major sponsors of the event are Larry Miller Subaru, Legacy Feed and Fuel, and Oxford Suites. Other sponsors include Quint Financial Group, Treasure Valley Refrigeration, MWI Veterinary Supply, Garry’s Automotive, Corporate Technologies, Media Specialties, AAA Idaho, Les Schwab Tires, Eagle Rodeo, and Treasure Valley Family Magazine. Citadel Broadcasting is the event’s media sponsor.
